Brief:
Rico Lavender asked me to take his product photography to another level, with super accuracy, detail and consistency.
Role:
Photographer, Retoucher, Graphic Designer
Tools:
Goals:
It starts with building a system where multiple smart objects are linked back to a master photoshop file. This powerful method can allow an editor to create modifications to one smart object and have it update back to the master once saved.
Challenges:
This process will require a lot of breaking down individual components within the watch face and using reference photos to match the upper and lower straps.
Solution:
I wanted to photograph everything separately. This gave my the most control. This sketch shows how I could put them together, and create several new images with the same individual pieces.
The Components and Break Down:
After I photographed each part, I grouped them in their own PSD file, which will later became the linked smart object.
I started with the Watch_Face.psd and broke down all of the components before clean up began.
The straps were the easiest part. I kept the better looking clasp and even added the pins in both straps. You'll never see them in picture, but if you wanted to see them separately, it would have been weirder without them there.
See? No pins equals weird.
Jokes aside, the only real down side to having something like this is file size. With the watch viewed at max length, you are looking at a 9,000 square pixel image. Sometimes working at this file size can be a little on the slow side, but the flexibility is worth it when you can make multiple variations and have unlimited control.
Thank you!
